# Managing Pain and Symptoms in Hospice Care

One of the most important aspects of hospice care is keeping patients comfortable. Effective pain and symptom management allows patients to focus on living fully rather than suffering, and gives families peace of mind.

## The Hospice Approach to Comfort

In hospice, the goal is not to cure the underlying disease but to manage its symptoms. This means:

- **Aggressive symptom control** using all available methods
- **24/7 availability** for urgent comfort needs
- **Individualized care** tailored to each patient's needs and preferences
- **Ongoing assessment** to adjust care as conditions change

## Common Symptoms We Manage

### Pain

Pain is perhaps the most feared symptom, but modern hospice care is highly effective at managing it:

- **Assessment**: We use pain scales and observation to understand your pain
- **Medications**: From mild to strong pain medications, we find what works
- **Routes**: Pills, patches, liquids, or injections—whichever is most effective
- **Non-medication approaches**: Positioning, massage, heat/cold therapy, relaxation

### Shortness of Breath

Difficulty breathing can be frightening. We help with:

- Oxygen therapy when needed
- Medications to reduce the sensation of breathlessness
- Positioning techniques
- Fan therapy and open windows
- Anxiety management, as fear worsens breathlessness

### Nausea and Vomiting

These symptoms can significantly impact quality of life. We address them through:

- Identifying and treating causes
- Anti-nausea medications
- Dietary modifications
- Complementary approaches like aromatherapy

### Fatigue

While we can't eliminate fatigue, we can help manage it:

- Prioritizing activities that matter most
- Energy conservation techniques
- Addressing contributing factors like anemia or dehydration
- Balancing rest with meaningful activity

### Anxiety and Restlessness

Emotional symptoms deserve attention too:

- Medications when appropriate
- Counseling and emotional support
- Music therapy and relaxation techniques
- Addressing underlying spiritual concerns

## Our Medication Philosophy

Many families worry about medications, particularly pain medications. Here's our approach:

### We Believe in Comfort

No one should suffer unnecessarily. We use medications effectively to ensure comfort.

### We Monitor Carefully

Our nurses regularly assess for side effects and adjust medications as needed.

### We Educate Families

We explain what each medication does and address concerns about addiction or hastening death.

### Myth: Pain Medications Hasten Death

Research shows that properly managed pain medication does not hasten death. In fact, uncontrolled pain can be more harmful than the medications used to treat it.

## The Role of the Family

Family members are essential partners in symptom management:

### Observe and Report

- Note when symptoms occur and what makes them better or worse
- Track medication timing and effects
- Report any new symptoms promptly

### Administer Medications

- We teach you how to give medications safely
- We're always available by phone for questions
- Emergency medications are kept in the home for urgent needs

### Provide Comfort Measures

- Repositioning to prevent pressure sores
- Mouth care for comfort
- Light massage or hand-holding
- Creating a peaceful environment

## When to Call the Hospice Team

Don't hesitate to call us for:

- Pain that isn't controlled by current medications
- New or worsening symptoms
- Difficulty with medications
- Any changes that concern you
- Questions about what's normal

## Our Commitment

At Graceland Hospice Care, we are committed to ensuring that every patient is as comfortable as possible. We have extensive experience in symptom management and use evidence-based approaches while honoring each patient's preferences and values.

No one should fear pain or suffering at the end of life. With proper hospice care, comfort is achievable for virtually every patient.
